The decade following the Second Vatican Council (1962-65) saw a number of changes within the Cathedral and its parish. The changes began when Bishop Foley had the spire removed from the bishop's throne, marking a change in hierarchical understanding. The Triptych was taken down, and repositioned on the wall above the north door.
In the 1980s Bishop John Brewer had it moved to the south transept, where the centrepiece remained until the present reordering in 1995 when it was reunited with its two wings. The stone screen around the Sacred Heart Chapel and the pulpit were removed in the first reordering in the 1970s. There have never been permanent altar rails in St Peter's. Wooden altar rails were stored in the baptistery and were brought out when needed. The altar was moved from the back of the apse to the front. In 1975 the organ was overhauled by Pendlebury of Cleveleys and a new console added. The picture below shows the console at the Organ builder's workshop.
